Palm Beach County Championships 2022: Benjamin boys claim historic win (2024)

JUPITER— Small schools racked up at the 2022Palm Beach County track and field championships, as King's topped the girls with 80 points while the Benjamin boys won with a lofty 107.5 points.

It was a historic win for not only the Bucs but the county as a whole.

"To be the first boys private school team to win the county championship is an honor, and I'm just glad I get to coach the great young men who achieved it," Benjamin coach Barrett Saunders said.

Saunders said hechallenged his team to make history heading into Thursday's meet.

They did just that, finishing with 18 top 10 placements and four first-place medalists.

Junior Cole Grande, who came in second in both the 100M and 200M dashes, called it a "pretty crazy" meet and that the Bucs knew "it was a big deal for our team and school."

"I think we were proving a point that as a small private school, we do have what it takes to compete with bigger schools," Grande said of his 3A squad. "It's tough for a small school to compete at meets because we don't have half the amount of people on our team that the bigger schools have."

However, Grande finds quality to be greater than quantity for Benjamin's roster, shouting out such "elite players" as Micah Mays, "which most teams just don't have."

TheClass of 2023 prospect made waves on the football field in the fall and has continued to do so on the track this spring, coming in 10th in the 200M dash, second in the triple jump and nabbing first place in the high jump and 400M dash to ultimately win meet MVP.

"I didn't know there was an MVP in the first place," Mays said, adding that all he knew entering the meet was that he "had to compete."

"Everyone has worked hard and will continue to work into the Palm League championship and districts," Mays said.

"We have a long ways to go. This is just a step."
