What is the rarest Magic: The Gathering set? ›

The Summer Edition (code-named “Edgar”) was a set that was meant to be released in the summer of 1994. This set was made to help with the shortage of cards for Revised, as well as fix Serindib Efreet, which was printed with the wrong picture and border color.

There are a lot of Magic: The Gathering formats. Like, a lot. There are, in fact, around 20 MTG formats spanning across the tabletop card game, the online versions and those specific to the physical TCG's digital counterpart Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Most Magic cards have an expansion symbol in their center-right, below the illustration. This symbol tells you which set the card is from.

The total number of MTG cards depends on what Magic: The Gathering card count you want to use – there are around 27,000 unique cards, but many more if you start to include reprints, variants, and 'out of game' cards like art cards and tokens.

Mox Sapphire, Vesuvan Doppelganger, & Time Walk are some of the priciest Magic cards, selling for thousands or even millions. Copy Artifact, Lord of the Pit, & Mox Jet are other highly valued cards due to their rarity & gameplay impact over the years.

EDH/Commander

On Paper, Commander is the most popular format, and it's not even close. Not only is Commander the most accessible format in MTG, but it's also the most well-supported. If you have a Local Game Store in your area, chances are they have a Commander night, or two, each week.

The color of the expansion symbol indicates the rarity of the card within its set. A red-orange symbol indicates the card is mythic rare. A gold symbol indicates the card is rare. A silver symbol indicates the card is uncommon.

As a result, there are just a few pieces of the Black Lotus that were ever made and exactly how many Black Lotus cards are still in use is unknown. There are around 5,000 Black Lotus magic cards that are still in sellable condition, according to some estimates. Most of them have been spoiled by the passage of time.

How to tell if MTG card is 4th edition? ›

If you look at the back of a Fourth Edition Card, the top right corner of the letter “a” in Magic will appear brighter than the rest of the lettering. On the back of an Alternate Fourth Edition card, the top right corner of the “a” in Magic will appear to be darker than the rest of the lettering.
