Hello All,

I have only had my ostomy bag for four months and yesterday was a nice warm day outside, so I decided to go outside and work in the garden. I wasn't sweating, but after I was done, my ostomy bag was sweating on the side that touches my skin, that's they only way to describe it and it had made my underwear damp. Also, where the filter is seemed to sweat onto my shirt and leave a stain. Yuck to both!! I Is this because of the particular type of bag I am using or does that happen with all bag types? I know several members live in warm places, Marge in Florida comes to mind, what do you do? The bag I am currently using is a 2-pc by Convatec #416419. Also, it is kind of noisy like crinkling paper when I move. I'm not sure I really like that either. Any suggestions for either issue?

Thanks,

Michelle

I've heard complaints of odor seemingly emit from the bag itself, and although I found it hard to believe, several people complained about it. In the end, it appeared to be a bad batch of bags from the manufacturer.

I mention this because if it was the bag itself that was "sweating", chances are an odor would also be present. So, I'm thinking it was your skin, sweating under the bag because it was creating a warmer area against that particular area. What do you think?

As far as the filter, welcome to the whacky world of ostomy bag filters. Rule #1: They leak. Rule #2: See Rule #1. :-)

I cover the filters on my pouches with the provided stickies before use.

Every pouch I've tried crinkles to some degree, of course I haven't tried them all. The crinkle-factor diminishes as they "break in". The Coloplast "Sensura Mio" is one style pouch that uses relatively soft material and so is less crinkly. I tried the 2-piece though and didn't like the attachment method. They may have a 1-piece.

Please call Convatec at 1-800-422-8811. You'll probably get to talk with a very well informed and interested Ostomy Nurse who will answer all your questions and address your concerns. That's been my experience.

Good luck,

I use a 2pc Hollister, beige cloth backing, pouch with no filter. Very little crackling...

I found that filters did not work for me...odor escapes and so can output.

In addition to the cloth backed pouch, I apply a little Gold Bond powder to the skin that touches the pouch.

Keeps skin more comfortable , especially in hot humid weather...

You can also purchase Pouch covers online, that cover the whole thing and help keep everything dry and comfortable!

Wishing you the best!

Yep. Here's my answer to the sweaty bag problem. It's cut from microfibre terry cloth, overlocked (serged) and edged around with thin 3-cord elastic on the inside edge. The ends are stitched so that it fits around the wafer quite loosely. You can cut 4 of these from one microfibre utility cloth. I've heard of people using newborn baby bibs the same way, although they are more bulky.

As for leakages of ANY kind from the welds or the filter, I'd definitely treat that as an appliance defect. If you have a box of a different batch, move on to them and report the problem to the manufacturer, with the lot # of the offending batch.

yes the back side of the bag will sweat against your body and some brands are noisier than others. hollister seems to be a more quieter one. the filters will leak and allow odor to escape as well. here are some bag cover images these i believe will help absorb the moisture when sweating there are tons of web sites that sell them and youtube videos that show how to make them as well.

I use the HOLLISTER bags and they have cloth on both sides of the bag. I usually cut of the cloth on the front of the bag and leave the cloth on the backside so that would absorb any moistre from sweating. Good luck on finding a solution for the perfect bag. Xox terri

I use pouch covers form C&S Ostomy - they have fun, cute ones. They keep me dry and provide an extra barrier for the occasional leak that occurs. They also muffle the crinkling sound. My doctors get a kick when they see them.

Mine sweats after a shower but I guess it's the difference between the temperature in the bag and outside. I place a clean flannel between the bag and my skin (held in place by my hernia belt) and that does the trick until the temperatures are equal.
