My mom was diagnosed with Colon Cancer Stage IV February 2017. She lives in Lima, Peru. I live here in USA for 30 years and thru this pages and American Cancer Society I’ve been able to educate myself and help my family so much. My mom is doing ok with prayers and a lot of family love and support. My mom was scheduled to have a colonoscopy today but my question is: how can they do a colonoscopy? Thru the stoma? Or the rectum? Unfortunately me being here I don’t trust a lot on what they do back home. They end up sending her home and told her she needed to do an enema because they could see much. I’m a little lost because the doctor that did my mom surgery was a oncology surgeon and I’m not sure if they communicate with the facility who does the colonoscopy. Any input is appreciated please.
Alícia.

Alícia, that's a really good question. A lot of it depends upon which kind of ostomy she has. Is it a colostomy (in that colon) or an ileostomy (small intestine)? If it's the latter, it would be done through the rectum. If it's a colostomy, I don't know. Maybe someone with one would know.
Good luck to your mother.

Alicia, my understanding is that they go through the stoma. Hope it went well.
Your mom is lucky to have such a wonderfully helpful daughter. My best to her.
With peace, anyark

It's done through the stoma. I have a colonoscopy every 2-3 years and do the same prep as before - it just takes less prep to get cleaned out. Best wishes.

Here they go thru the stomaI usually don't know it because they sedate me. No pain, for me anyways. Hope things went well for her. Martyjane

Alicia 14 I have a colostomy and colonoscopy is done through the stoma. I had one recently. It is not as bad as through the rectum. The prep is easier. I do hope your Mum is ok. Well done for your research and helping her.

Hi Alicia, I have a Colostomy and have had a colonoscopy done and they actually did both. First went to the rectum then pulled off my Ostomy bag/pouch and went through my Stoma. I think the whole plan is to look for any signs of polyps or other signs of trouble all along the colon. They usually have you do prep prior to the procedure. My thing is to eat light for a few days then do the drinking prep. Stay near a toilet or place to empty for hours because it cleans you out!!!!! So when they do go in they can see all along the colon. Hope this helps some with your mom.

Oh, usually all the doctors keep in touch with each other’s findings to have the big picture as to how to proceed in treatments. Usually along with the enema is the prep that you drink. Here in the US you can pick it up at any drug store,Walmart,or pharmacy.

I have a colostomy, and my colonoscopy was done through the stoma, as my rectum was removed. They popped the bag off, put me to sleep, and went in. I brought them a fresh bag to put on, and it all worked like a charm.
